Clipsal – Smart Wiring Tech Course

Overview

The National Broadband Network (NBN) rollout is one of the most exciting telecommunication projects embarked on here in Australia. Effectively 11,000,000 premises will be supplied with a high speed fibre cable, capable of delivering speeds between 100Mbs and 1000Mbs (Gigabit Ethernet).

This opens up a whole new area of possibilities for the end user in relation to

  • Internet Access
  • IP TV
  • Media applications including distribution
  • Video on Demand (VoD)
  • High speed gaming
  • Virtual classrooms for remote and distance education

The list is limitless as new applications will develop as speed and technology advances.

As part of the NBN installation an outdoor fibre termination box will be installed on the property. A technician will then be responsible to reconnect the existing telephone cabling into that box and ensure the customer is left with a working telephone service.

Question

What about the rest of the services:

  • VoIP Telephony
  • Data Cable for the Internet router
  • Internal cabling for high speed networking
  • TV and Pay-For-View distribution

These technologies form part of what we call smart wiring or star wiring. But cabling by itself is not enough; today's technician needs to have a good understanding of digital transmission and IP configurations. Any technician or company planning to move into this space will need to become a 'one stop shop'.

The amount of opportunity and the technical level required to take advantage of those opportunities will see the dynamic of many installation companies change as the NBN progresses.

Course Outline

In order to help facilitate this potential Integracom in conjunction with Clipsal have developed training workshops that will be run nationally and are nationally endorsed. A skill set has been identified based on national training packages that have been customised to suit.

The skill set includes:

  • Open Cabling Registration (Cabling License)
  • Digital Reception Technology (Government Endorsed Program)
  • Antennas and Satellite installations
  • Structured Cabling for homes incorporating the Clipsal Star Serve
  • IP Networking

Course Delivery

This course is designed to be delivered with an on line content followed by classroom based workshops. Therefore the technician can study in their own time and then attend a workshop of their choice in each state for 5 days.

The break up is a s follows:

  • Open Registration - 3 weeks self study Plus 2 days in class
  • Digital Reception Technology - 3 weeks self study Plus 2 days in class
  • Structured Cabling for Homes - 2 weeks self study Plus 1 day in class
  • IP Networking - On line using Integracoms Network simulators

Technicians can decide which units they want to attend, for example if a technician already holds an open registration they can skip unit 1 and still attend unit 2, 3 and 4.
