Migrating to Australia

Requirements for Security Technicians

The Technical Security Industry in Australia is similar to most electronic security industries in Europe and America.

The industry comprises of technicians multitasking in areas such as

  1. Domestic and Commercial Intruder alarm Installations
  2. CCTV
  3. Access Control
  4. Building Integration on IP Platforms

What will be slightly different is the types of equipment used as most are Australian manufactured to suit the harsh environments that equipment must operate in.

For example surveillance and control equipment installed in an external cabinet must be ruggerised to work in temperatures exceeding 70 deg Celsius.

A technician may also find the working environment slightly different to what they have been previously used to, for example the temperature in a roof space on a hot day in February may exceed 55 Deg Celsius making it slightly uncomfortable for fishing cables etc.

So where do you start?

Australia has a very strong regulatory environment that mandates WHO can install maintain and service electronic security equipment.

In order to install cabling and equipment for an electronic security system including CCTV you require two separate registrations / licences.

Acquiring both of these is a mandatory requirement before a technician can install any electronic security equipment.

Firstly the technician requires a cabling registration as a minimum.

This is a national requirement but the qualification is a national qualification accepted in all states and territories.

There are primarily two types of cabling registration

  1. Restricted Registration
For Technicians who mainly work in Domestic Installations or in commercial buildings where no telecommunications cabling infrastructure is being installed for integration i.e. UTP CAT 5 and CAT 6 or Fibre Optic Cables.

  2. Open Registration
For Technicians wishing to work in commercial premises installing electronic security devices that interconnect via Network Cabling, Fibre Optics and Telecommunications Equipment.

In today's working environment where telecommunications infrastructure is used to integrate services an Open Registration is highly recommended.

Information on the Open Registration can be found here.

Secondly the technician requires an Alarm Installers License.
The requirements for this licence changes from state to state.

In order to obtain this license a technician is generally required to do the following:

Obtain a letter of intent from a licensed Security Agent outlining their intent to employ you as a Security Installer.
Complete a pre-licence test if you wish to install or maintain electronic alarm systems, install or maintain security doors, or install or maintain CCTV.

The alarm test is based upon Australian Standard AS2201.1-5 (Intruder Alarm Systems), basic electronic skills including circuit calculations and component values. The applicant must achieve a minimum of 80% to pass this test.

The security door test is based on the Australian Standard 2804 (Fitting).
The applicant must achieve a minimum of 60% to pass this test.

In order to facilitate the above requirements for the alarm installers course Integracom have two training courses to train students on how to install a security alarm system and how to install CCTV equipment.

  1. Alarm installation Course
  2. CCTV Installation Course

On successful completion of both of these courses the student will be competent to sit the relevant examinations at the Police Licensing Centre in various states

Some of the common security systems used in Australia:
