Migrating to Australia

Requirements for Telecommunication Technicians

The Telecommunications Industry in Australia is similar to most other Telecommunication industries in Europe and America.

The industry comprises of technicians multitasking in areas such as

  1. Installing UTP (CAT5,CAT6 & CAT7) cabling in commercial buildings

  2. Installing Fibre Optic cabling in commercial building as a backbone infrastructure

  3. Installing Fibre Optic cabling externally for FTTH and FTTX for broadband distribution

  4. Design and construct telecommunication infrastructures for heavy industry including Mining sites, oil and gas platforms and water infrastructure systems

What will be slightly different is the installation practices used as most networks are designed to suit the harsh environments that equipment must operate in.

A technician may also find the working environment slightly different to what they have been previously used to, for example the temperature in a roof space on a hot day in February may exceed 55 Deg Celsius making it slightly uncomfortable for fishing cables etc.

So where do you start?

Here in Australia we have a very strong regulatory environment that mandates WHO can work on a telecommunications network and WHAT can be connected to that network. In order to work on a telecommunications network you require a cabling Registration as a minimum. This is a mandatory Requirement.

There are three types

1. Lift Registration

2. Restricted Registration

3. Open Registration

The Open Registration is considered to be Basic Training that allows a technician after successful completion to move into many different areas of the industry

Next:

After completing an Open Registration a technician may wish to acquire specialist endorsements on their registration.
Theses endorsements are not mandatory but are desirable by potential employers.

An example of some of these specialist courses are:

Structured Cabling Course

Allowing a technician to understand the basic fundamentals of data transmission on a structured cabling system including installation practices and testing.

Fibre Optic Course

Allowing a technician to understand the basic fundamentals of data transmission on a Fibre Optic cabling system including installation practices and testing.

Working with IP Networks

This Course takes a Technician or Electrician through the technical requirements that are needed to install IP enabled devices onto an IP Network or ADSL Circuit. The content was developed to help the technician to understand the concept of Network Terminology.

Network Infrastructure Design Course

This course is a high level Network Infrastructure Design Course, allowing a student to competently design a cabling infrastructure to AS/NZS standards. On completion a student will have tha ability to analyse user requirements and design a telecommunications infrastructure to suit. For more details click here.

All courses are nationally accredited and form part of the ICT 02 Training package which can lead a technician to acquire a Certificate III in Telecommunications
